In 1965, after watching the United Nations being televised in New York, Arrdeen Vaughan was struck by the sight of the limousines. On a whim, he booked a flight to New York, determined to buy one for his funeral home in Alvarado, Texas. However, he landed at Newark Airport and found himself lost. Outside the airport, an old lady directed him to Jerome Avenue, where her son, Jerry Haskell, sold limousines. She even helped him get on the bus and subway, advising him to get off one stop after Yankee Stadium.

Following her directions, Arrdeen found a "factory formal" limousine, which was perfect for his needs. On his journey back to Texas, he stopped in Venita, Oklahoma, to refuel and ended up selling the limousine right there at the gas station! Undeterred, he took a bus back to New York, bought another limousine, and eventually sold it to Joe Kotch of Kotch Funeral Home in West, Texas.

Arrdeen’s repeated trips to New York to buy and sell limousines marked the beginning of Vaughan Specialty Automobiles, a business that became known for providing high-quality limousines and hearses.
